Sam’s Café

So my friend and I had a dinner date last night, it was great. We went to a little place in the Peg called Sam’s Café. I had a roasted chicken and red pepper sandwich (with béchemel sauce ppl!), with a cinnamon bun and a coffee. Yum!

It was so sweet, because there was live music - all bluesgrassy and stuff, there’s a 2nd hand book shop and the people were all very nice.

Its funny because when we went, it was with the idea that we need to patronize local business. However, when we got there, it was a full house. I would have never figured, there were warm fuzzies everywhere.

As it turns out, Sam’s Café is an initiative by the Mennonite Central Committee as a sort of fundraising project. Well.  All I have to say is WELL DONE on their part. I’m not religious really, but I think its really cool that the MCC goes to such effort to do good and kindhearted things.

Okay. So I got some killer books. I picked up:

• Sophocles II - A collection of 4 Tragedies (Ajax, The Women of Trachis, Electra, and Philoctetes)

• Anne Brontë’s - The Tenant of Wildfell Hall - super exciting, because you can find Emily’s and Charlotte’s books rather easily, but finding Anne’s book? Superb!

• Emily Brontë’s - Wuthering Heights - I really enjoyed this book last year (a borrowed copy), but this version is really compelling because its a Norton Critical Edition. So, there are essays and stuff to inform the reader about Emily’s life and what influenced the book. I don’t know about you, but for me, context is very important.

• Umberto Eco’s - How to Travel with a Salmon - Need I say more? :D I’ve always wanted to read Eco, and the Table of Contents really piqued my interest.

• Albert Camus’ - The Outsider - It has a cute little hand written note on the inside cover that reads “Happy 21st Birthday, Love Cathy”. Hah! Anyhow, I’ve read The Plague and really enjoyed it. I also have a copy of L’Etranger in french, that I will one day read with a companion dictionary.

Yeah, so a super good evening :D I can’t wait until I have time for reading again!
